The latest entry into the vast canon of Star Trek movies and TV series is a whole lot of fun.  screen-capture-3Cute guys in the leads, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Kirk, certainly don’t take away from the pleasure.  But beyond that it has a good story, going back to where they began their careers in Star Fleet academy. It is no doubt a prequel to all the rest of the movies to come in that  we are introduced one by one to the characters that defined the original series: Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty and Bones, each takes their place along side Kirk as he performs one heroic feat after another on his path to becoming the captain.  By the end, we are set up for any and all sequels they want to make. And I hope there are many, if they can continue in this vein.

In the beginning, I had a little trouble seeing Zachary Quinto as Spock  because of his role in the television show Heroes where his Sylar is the evil one.  But as it went along, I felt less and less of Sylar and by the end he’d settled neatly into the new Spock. I am particularly looking forward to the next one for more of his relationship with Uhura.  I also hope that Leonard Nimoy gets to come back as often as possible as the time traveling Spock.

This could have so easily been a total guy movie.  screen-capture-1By that I mean, lots of special effects and not much attention paid to the relationships.  But JJ Abrams is a smart one.  Star Trek has it all: effects, stunts, relationships, and a lot of good old fashioned story.  I wonder though, how differently you’d see this, if you never saw the original television series.  There are lots of references you might miss, but I think it would stand on its own nevertheless.

Oh, just one more thing; I went to this movie with my mother and she liked it, too.
