I opted to attend a screening of Something Borrowed as opposed to the surefire hit Thor because I was in the mood for a romantic dramedy and figured I paid my blockbuster dues last week with Fast Five. Sure enough, I got exactly what I expected – a decent, if somewhat formulaic and predicable, chick flick. No special effects, no crazy stunts, no superheroes. Just lots of pretty people getting mixed up in that crazy little thing called love.

Something Borrowed stars Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love) as Rachel, a cute, smart, goody two-shoes lawyer who lets her beautiful, flaky and self-absorbed best friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson) get whatever she wants… even if it’s Dex (Colin Egglesfield), the guy that Rachel’s had a massive crush on since law school. By the time Rachel reveals her true feelings to Dex – and learns that he feels the same – he’s already engaged to Darcy. And neither one has the guts to confront Darcy about it. Oh, what a tangled web they weave…

Egglesfield is cute and conflicted as Dex, but it’s hard to get past his eerie resemblance to a young Tom Cruise. The jaw, the eyes, the hair… even the Jerry Maguire-esque “you complete me”-type speech near the end of the movie. It’s downright distracting (even though it’s certainly not his fault).

The movie also stars John Krasinski (The Office) as Ethan, Rachel’s longtime friend and confidante – who harbors a secret crush of his own. He provides some of the movie’s sweetest and funniest moments.

One fellow critic (a rooster) wondered how and why Rachel and Darcy could possibly be such good friends in the first place. Gals will likely ‘get it’ more than guys.

Something Borrowed is ultimately all about going for what you want, even if you don’t get it. The movie doesn’t necessarily send the best messages about friendship, dating and commitment, but whatever. It’s cute.

  1. I completely agree with Mainstream Chick’s review of Something Borrowed. It was a great way to end a crazy day…that is, a classic chick flick. Mainstream Chick was also spot on in her comparison of Colin Egglesfield to Tom Cruise. Definitely worth seeing if you are looking for a good chick flick.

  2. Apparently, there is a bonus scene at the end of the credits that would serve as the launching point for a sequel (based on a follow-up book called “Something Blue”).

That’s what I get for not staying thru the entire credit roll.
