Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is delicious, a fun film for kids and the adults who take them to see it. I saw it in 2D because my six-year-old excuse for seeing movies like this has something against the 3D glasses, but I think it must be even more fun in 3D. Cheeseburgers flying off the screen at you… how much fun would that be? But even without the benefit of 3D this movie was chock full of laughs for both my first-grade companion and me.
The story is set on a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic that depended on the sardine industry for its livelihood but has fallen on hard times ever since people figured out that sardines are “super gross.” So when a young inventor named Flint Lockwood comes up with a machine that turns water into food and accidentally launches it into the clouds, the mayor sees an opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to come to a place where it’s raining pancakes and snowing ice cream? But of course, things don’t go quite as planned and it’s up to Flint and a visiting weather girl named Sam Sparks to save the day.
There are some fun supporting characters added to the mix like the mayor who keeps getting fatter and fatter, Baby Brent, the town’s former child star, and Earl Devereaux, the by-the-book town cop whose chest hairs tingle when trouble is brewing — who by the way is voiced by the one and only Mr. T! And, along with the food from the sky, come a few lessons about greed, being careful what you wish for, and being true to yourself.
It’s a nice animated treat for the whole family. Go, see, enjoy.
sounds yummy!
