Sometimes Netflix has just what you need for a night in! This adaptation of Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery is the perfect flick to take your mind off the crazy world out there. It has big stars: Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan. A big director: Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone). A not too big time commitment: 1hr 48m. And the plot is not too convoluted.
The gist: Four older folks are living in Coopers Chase, a gorgeous English country estate retirement community. For fun they have a club that examines cold murder cases, every Thursday. But then someone turns up dead and they put their considerable experience to the test to get to the truth, despite the police getting in their way. Turns out the victim was one of the owners of their home, and the man who stands to gain wants to sell the place, kicking them all to the curb. And they can’t have that!
There are a number of suspects, a young policewoman who helps them with inside info, some clever subterfuge, and a lot of sleuthy shenanigans. There are also side plots with a husband who has dementia and a dying friend who was a police detective. But I won’t spill the beans on who dun it, because that’s the fun!
Is it a GREAT movie? Nah. But it has a great cast that is so much fun to watch and if you’re a mystery flick lover, it’s just the ticket!
