Review: Tick, Tick…Boom!

Tick, Tick…Boom! Andrew Garfield is dynamite and so is this film–especially if you’re a musical theater geek. Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Hamilton) makes his feature directorial debut with Tick, Tick…Boom!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the creator of the hit musical Rent. Larson died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm in 1996, just as previews for Rent were about to begin off-Broadway. The film is essentially a love letter to and by Larson.

Review: Bad Boys For Life

“Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do…?” Gonna make a movie and a sequel or two.

It all began in 1995, with Bad Boys, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two Miami narcotics detectives who live by the motto, “Ride together. Die together.” Then came Bad Boys II in 2003, with more of the same. And now, there’s Bad Boys For Life, more of the same – again – with a slightly twistier twist than its immediate predecessor. In other words, you know what you’re in for with this franchise: Two longtime friends who drive each other crazy also have each others’ backs through a barrage of violence, comedy, drama, car chases, motorcycle chases, helicopter chases, bloodshed, bromance, and collateral damage.

Quickie Review: Second Act

Second Act is a predictable, formulaic, contrived, fine but forgettable dramedy that pales in comparison to J-Lo gems like Maid in Manhattan and The Wedding Planner or even The Back-up Plan. If you go into Second Act expecting a fun, endearing ‘romantic comedy’ featuring Jennifer Lopez and Milo “Jack from This Is Us” Ventimiglia, you may be doubly disappointed. The romance is secondary to a larger story about life choices and female empowerment. That’s all well and good, but it puts poor Milo to waste.
