And the Oscar Goes To… Not a Clue

[Post-Oscars Update: I did okay! Though I could not have predicted the Chris Rock-Will Smith debacle; there’s no excuse for the show cutting out eight worthy categories from the live show while including unnecessary bits and still running a bloated 3:40; Amy Schumer was the best of the hosting trio; I still think Andrew Garfield should’ve won best actor (and wouldn’t hit anybody); and most importantly– yay, CODA!!!!!]

I’m making my picks with the Oscars just a few short hours away. I have no idea what will win this year. I have my favorites of course, but that doesn’t translate into Oscar gold, or Oscar pool/party bragging rights (though how I do miss those—maybe next year!).

The past few years, I’d seen just about everything on the ballot, including the shorts. But this year, I’m coming up, well, short. So I’ll just make my predictions with all sorts of caveats and maybe delete this whole post tomorrow! 

Here goes:

Mainstream Chick’s Oscar Picks for 2021

UPDATE: In what I found to be a rather boring presentation of the awards, I ended up with a score of 16/23. Not too bad all things considered. It was a weird year in film – and life. I look forward to next year and hope it is filled with more joy – and music! -hb

Let’s just go ahead and make it official – my picks for the 93rd annual Academy Awards being handed out Sunday, April 25, 2021 after a long COVI-Delay. I discussed them all with my cinematic nemesis Charlie Juhl on a recent episode of “The Cinema Clash.” But just in case you missed it (wine wager and all) and/or haven’t filled out your own ballot yet… this may or may not help your chances of winning the remote office pool! I don’t know the order in which the awards will be announced, so I’m following the Oscars 2021 Play Along Ballot, except for Best Picture, which I’m saving for last. So, without further ado…

CinemaClash Podcast: Zootopia, London Has Fallen, WTF

Check out my latest podcast with Charlie Juhl. This week, Charlie and I clash over Zootopia, London Has Fallen, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. He thinks my tastes are shallow. I think his are pretentious. Take a listen, and let us know what YOU think!

Mainstream Chick’s Oscar Adventure

By now, anyone familiar with us, and our site, is well aware that Arty Chick and I went to the Oscars. Sort of. We’ve plastered our pictures on Facebook and across the social media universe and regaled our friends with tales from the Red Carpet. But in case you’ve just stumbled across Chickflix.net or are hungry for more details, here’s how it all went down.

Ten Best Picture nominees… Really? What do you think?

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced it’s doubling the number of Best Picture nominees to ten, my first thought was “gawd, that means the Oscars will run even longer than ever!” My second thought was “will they be able to find ten worthy films.” Odds are there are now going to be at least one or two “artsy-fartsy” (sorry Arty Chick) movies on the list that no one has ever heard of and those of us who try to see ALL of the nominated films each year will feel compelled to go see.
